The B.I.G. Feed

Our B.I.G. Feed Story

In 2009, members of Wylie UMC realized that many students in Wylie ISD who were on free and reduced lunches were coming back to school on Mondays HUNGRY.

They quickly realized that this problem was big, but it was not too big for God! That year, the B.I.G.Feed was created. They could have been overwhelmed, But In God, they realized that anything was possible.

Since 2009, B.I.G.Feed has been serving students in Wylie ISD with food every weekend during the school year. It has expanded into all but two schools, and includes snacks for athletic programs, extra food for counselors to give out to students as needed, and more. In the 2023-2024 school year, B.I.G. Feed gave away over 7,000 bags of food (averaging 250 a week)!

We anticipate that our costs this year will average $1500 per month. This is in addition to the physical donations of food and the support of our local food pantries and donors. Volunteers get together every week to pack the bags of single serve food items and then deliver by hand those bags to each partner school. As costs continue to rise, we know that continuing this work will be more and more difficult...But IGod, we know that this is possible!

Funding & Food Procurement

Each week during the school year, we assess what our local pantries (Amazing Grace in Wylie & 5 Loaves in Sachse) have on hand to give towards our weekend food bags.  We purchase any additional food needed in order to fill up our student's bags for the weekend.  We have been more than generously supported by our church members and community.  However, even with those donations, it has been hard to keep up with the purchasing needs due to the rise in the cost of goods.

Our average spend per month is $1500.00.

This summer during our VBS bible school, our mission project was to donate to the B.I.G. Feed.  Our kids proudly contributed and we were able to gather enough food for the first few weeks of school.

Volunteers

Volunteers gather at Amazing Grace and 5 Loaves, each Thursday morning, to pack up and deliver the bags of food to our WISD campuses.
